BIOGRAPHY

Shawn Michaels is a born entertainer. From a very young age, he had a strong desire to become a wrestler and, when he was 18 years old, he started training under the guidance of Jose Lothario. Two weeks after Shawn's nineteenth birthday, Shawn was fought his first match in the Mid-South Wrestling organisation. Even though Shawn lost to Art Cruz, he showed he was capable in the ring. Shawn wrestled to a time limit draw in his next match and picked up a win in his third.

After six months in Mid-South Shawn moved on to Kansas City, to an organisation run by Bob Geigel, here Shawn met Marty Jannetty. A few months later Shawn moved to Texas All-Star wrestling, where he teamed with Paul Diamond, together they were known as 'American Force'. They won the Texas All-Star Tag Team Title twice and had a strong feud with the Masked Hoods.

In 1986 Shawn formed 'The Midnight Rockers' with Marty Jannetty. The team was an instant success, winning the NWA Central States Tag Team Title, but they were only able to hold on to it for a week before losing to Bart and Brad Batten, the team they had dethroned.

Towards the end of 1986 the Midnight Rockers joined the American Wrestling Association (AWA), where they won the World Tag Team Titles. In the AWA they got a lot of TV time, which led to the WWF's interest in the team. They were invited to wrestle at a TV taping, but they had too much fun at a nightclub and were fired before they started.

Back in the AWA, the Midnight Rockers had continued success, winning the Southern Tag Team Title twice. When Shawn and Marty won the AWA World Tag Team Title for a second time, the WWF renewed their interest, this time the Midnight Rockers towed the line.

Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty entered the WWF in 1988, now known as 'The Rockers', a duo which quickly became a success with the fans. Their high-flying abilities were a hit. At that time the WWF had several very good teams in the tag division. The Demolition, Hart Foundation, British Bulldogs, Powers of Pain, Brain Busters and the Bolsheviks to name but a few.

This didn't stop the Rockers from trying, they took on all comers and even though they lost many of their matches to the established heavyweight teams, they still captured the hearts of the fans. One of their best feuds in their first year with the WWF was with the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, which show-cased two of the best technical teams going at it.

Through much of 1990 the Rockers had trouble with Power & Glory (Hercules and Paul Roma), At Summerslam 1990, Hercules used a chain to take out Shawn's knee, before they put away Marty.

In October, the Rockers would defeat the WWF Tag Team Champions, the Hart Foundation for the WWF Tag Team Titles, the Rockers won the match, but the decision was scrapped and it was never recognised, although it has been mentioned on TV since. (Full details of this incident are available on the WWFAQ page).

The Rockers feuded with the Orient Express for a while after, culminating in a Royal Rumble 1991 victory for the Rockers. The team soon hit a bit of turbulence, ending in a split which shocked WWF fans and put Shawn Michaels on the road to Wrestling stardom, and Marty Jannetty on the scrapheap.

At the 1991 Survivor Series, Shawn Michaels was eliminated after being hit in the face by an opponent, who was being carried by Marty Jannetty. Upset by this, Shawn abandoned his partner, who would take a right pasting. The team seemingly ironed out their problems and made up on an episode of the barbershop. Then, shockingly, Shawn delivered a Superkick to Jannetty before slamming his head through a window.

Now repackaged as 'the Sexy Boy', Shawn made his singles PPV debut at the 1992 Royal Rumble. Shawn entered a reasonable performance in the rumble match before being ousted by Tito Santana. His first major success came at Wrestlemania 8 in Indianapolis, Indiana were Shawn, now accompanied by 'The Sensational' Sherri Martel defeated Santana in a solid opener. At Summerslam '92 in London, England, Shawn fought Rick Martel to a double count out in a battle over Sherri. A few weeks later, Shawn defeated The British Bulldog to win the Englishman's Intercontinental Championship. The date, 27 October 1992. Shawn's first WWF strap enlarged his reputation, and apparently, his ego. Shawn successfully defended his title for the remainder of the year, losing only to Bret Hart at the Survivor Series in a bout where Bret's WWF Title was the only one on the line. Shawn also had many battles with 'the Hitman' at house shows, including a very innovative ladder match.

At the Royal Rumble of 1993, Shawn would meet an old nemesis, Marty Jannetty, for Shawn's coveted IC Title. Shawn defeated the former-Rocker via pinfall. At Wrestlemania 9 in Las Vegas, Shawn lost to Tatanka by count out, but retained the IC belt. The following Month, on May 17, Marty Jannetty pinned Shawn Michaels to win the Intercontinental Title. His reign was short-lived, Shawn, accompanied by his new bodyguard, the 7-foot Diesel (Kevin Nash), regained the belt. The next two PPV's saw Shawn successfully, defend the title against Crush at the King of the Ring, and Mr Perfect at Summerslam. Diesel heavily assisted both victories.

Shawn had a few problems behind the scenes and was stripped of the IC title; the reason given on television was that Shawn had not defended the belt in the necessary 30 days. At the start of 1994, with his problems behind him, Shawn began a legendary feud with Razor Ramon (Scott Hall). Claiming to be the real Intercontinental Champ, having never lost the belt, Shawn was a thorn in the side of Ramon, the new IC champion. At Wrestlemania 10, Shawn met Razor in a ladder match, with Shawn's phoney IC belt and the real one both hanging above the ring. In an encounter that will go down in wrestling folklore, the best match of 1994 and the first mainstream PPV ladder match, Razor Ramon would come out on top. This didn't stop Shawn's momentum and the day before Summerslam '94, Shawn and the WWF IC Champion, Diesel, won the tag team titles, an achievement that was four years overdue for Shawn. The harmony between the champs didn't last long. A Shawn Michaels Superkick cost Diesel the IC belt on that very show. Another misplaced Superkick later, at the Survivor Series, was the end of this beautiful friendship. Three days later, Diesel defeated Bob Backlund to win the WWF Championship.

In January 1995, Shawn won the Royal Rumble, starting at number one; he eventually eliminated the British Bulldog to earn a shot at the WWF Championship at Wrestlemania 11. At Wrestlemania, Diesel defeated Shawn, accompanied by Sid. A Shawn Michaels Superkick had the match won, however the earlier 'ref. bump' cost Shawn the belt. A jack-knife later, Diesel was still the WWF Champion.

The following night on Raw, Shawn announced that he no longer required Sid's services. Sid repaid Shawn with five powerbombs, putting Shawn out and leading to an inevitable reunion with Diesel, who defeated Sid at the first two In your House PPV events. At In your House 2, Shawn returned and beat Jeff Jarrett to win his 3rd IC title.

Behind the scenes, the Clique, led by Shawn Michaels were having a great influence in regard to the booking and general direction of the WWF. Shawn, Kevin "Diesel" Nash, Scott "Razor Ramon" Hall, Sean "123 Kid" Waltman and Paul "HHH" Levesque, who were the clique members, had little respect for or from the other wrestlers. (Check out the Shawn Michaels FAQ page for more info on the clique).

A couple of months later, Shawn was beaten up outside a nightclub in Syracuse. In an on screen angle, Shawn was forced to vacate the IC title, and then collapsed during a match with Owen Hart. Suffering from 'stress', Shawn was ordered to rest and took some time off of TV. On his return, Shawn was entered into the Royal Rumble Match. Just like last year, Shawn was victorious, however this time, Shawn's win delighted the fans and Shawn received a huge ovation.

At Wrestlemania 12, Shawn would face Bret Hart for the WWF Championship in Anaheim, California, in a 60 minute Iron Man Match. It was a match that the fan's had waited a long time to see. On 31 March 1996, Shawn Michaels defeated the Hitman in overtime to achieve his Boyhood Dream; he captured the World Wrestling Federation Championship for the first time.

Shawn's first PPV defence was against Diesel at the In Your House event, sub titled "Good Friends, Better Enemies". For the first time, Diesel played the heel against his friend. This would be Diesel's last WWF PPV match as he, along with Razor Ramon, left for WCW. Before they left, there was the small matter of the now infamous MSG incident in which the Clique said goodbye (Check the FAQ section for greater info).

Shawn's title reign was good but no more, he had strong PPV defences against the British Bulldog (twice), Vader and a super bout with Mankind, but it never really reached the WWF's expectations. In November, at the Survivor Series, Shawn lost the title to Sid. A change done to set up the rematch at the Royal Rumble in San Antonio, were the hometown boy would attempt to take back the belt. Which he did. The following month, Shawn vacated the title, claiming to have 'lost his smile'. Many theories have been passed on this subject, some claiming that Shawn had hoped to get out of his contract and join Nash, Hall and Waltman in WCW. However, the most popular theory states that at Wrestlemania 13, the WWF had planned for Shawn to lose the WWF Championship to Bret Hart, something that Shawn did not want to do.

Shawn took a few months out and returned again in May, together with Steve Austin, he took the tag team titles from Owen Hart and the British Bulldog. Trouble caused from the Hart Foundation led to the champs facing each other in a double DQ ending bout at the King of the Ring. In August, Shawn was appointed Guest referee for the WWF title match at Summerslam, where the Undertaker would defend against Bret Hart. During the bout, Shawn tried to hit Hart with a chair but missed and took out the Undertaker. Due to a pre-match stipulation that stated if Shawn screwed Bret, he could never fight in the WWF again; Shawn had no choice but to count the pin.

The following week on Raw, the Undertaker confronted Shawn, expecting an explanation and an apology. Inexplicably, Shawn turned, laying into the Undertaker with chairshots. Shawn formed D-Generation X with Triple H, Chyna and Rick Rude. After a Ground Zero no contest with the Undertaker, Shawn was signed to face him again, in the first ever Hell in a Cell match at Badd Blood. The winner would earn a title shot at the Survivor Series.

The Hell in a Cell match was bloody and brutal, Shawn fell 20 feet from the Cell and was thrown around like a rag-doll, he would emerge successful, however, when Kane, making his WWF debut, planted his brother and Shawn got the pinfall. Shortly after, Shawn defeated Davey Boy Smith in Manchester, England, to win the European Championship, making it a grand slam. Michaels is the only man to hold all four major WWF belts. He would later give the European Title to his DX compatriot, Triple H. The title bout at the Survivor Series will go down in mat history as one of the most controversial of all time (see Bret Hart FAQ for more on the 'Montreal' incident) but in the end, Shawn Michaels emerged with his 3rd WWF Championship.

An inauspicious reign was blighted by the troubles Shawn was having with his back. At the 1998 Royal Rumble, Shawn defended against the Undertaker in a Casket match. He took a nasty looking Chokeslam into the casket and ruptured several discs. He won the match, thanks to Kane's interference, but was not comfortable. Shawn was rested by the WWF and hardly fought at all leading upto his Wrestlemania date with 'Stonecold' Steve Austin. He even missed the February PPV event, No Way Out of Texas. His on screen role served only to hype the match and build up DX's relationship with Mike Tyson, the special enforcer for Wrestlemania.

Shawn Michaels' loss to Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 14 in Boston, Massachusetts has, thus far, turned out to be his last match for the WWF. He announced his retirement shortly after and has since had only a minor on screen role. He was appointed the commissioner, but only turned up in order to annoy Vince McMahon. Shawn was the guest referee for the Main Event of the first Smackdown, screwing the Rock out of the title. His last PPV appearance was as the referee for the Rock/Triple H Iron Man match at Judgement Day 2000. His only TV role since was to deny any involvement in the Austin Hit and Run debacle.

Now a family man, Shawn married Rebecca Curci, the former WCW Nitro Girl, Whisper, last year and they have since had a son, Cade. Shawn has spent the last two years building up his promotion, the TWA (Texas Wrestling Alliance), and the attached wrestling school. In one 'final' match, Shawn fought the top TWA heel, Venom, in a bunkhouse brawl last year to garner publicity for the TWA.

A lot of talk has surfaced recently about a Michaels return to the ring. Apparently Shawn has stated that he feels in the best shape he's felt in a long time. Previously, Shawn had stated that he would return only if his son wanted to see him in action or if Vince McMahon was desperate for a Main Event. This along with the recent statements has led a lot of people to believe that the original 'Boy Toy' may just role into Wrestlemania 17 in Texas, for one last hurrah. Whether this is true or not, there is no doubt that to those who have seen him in action, Shawn Michaels will forever be the Icon, the Showstopper and THE Main Event.
